What is the difference between the PowerEdge XE9680 and the XE8640?

Both are Dell PowerEdge accelerated compute servers, and the difference is GPU density and cooling. The XE8640 is a 4U air-cooled chassis with four NVIDIA H100 SXM5 GPUs and NVLink. The XE9680 is Dell's flagship application server for training and deploying large models, and its liquid-cooled siblings go denser still: the XE9685L is a 4U liquid-cooled chassis carrying eight NVIDIA HGX H100 or H200 GPUs on AMD EPYC. If the workload is a handful of training jobs, the XE8640 is usually the right shape. If it is large-model training at density, the 9680 family is. Send us the workload and we will tell you which one we would sell you.

How much does a Dell PowerEdge XE8640 cost?

There is no list price that holds. On the XE line the GPU count and model drive most of the cost, followed by CPU, memory, storage and whether the chassis is air or liquid cooled, and condition changes it again: new, refurbished and off-lease units of the same model sit at different numbers and the secondary market moves week to week. Send IO South the configuration you want, or a part number you were quoted elsewhere, and we price that exact build.

Does IO South sell refurbished Dell PowerEdge servers?

Yes. IO South supplies PowerEdge servers new, refurbished and off-lease. We hold the inventory rather than drop-shipping it, so we can answer configuration questions about the specific unit and tell you when a refurbished build gets you the same result for less.

What is the PowerEdge XR series used for?

The XR line is Dell's rugged, short-depth server range for deployments outside a data center. The XR5610 is a rugged short-depth 1U purpose-built for the edge, designed to excel across telecom, retail, manufacturing and defense workloads where depth, temperature and vibration rule out a standard rack server.

Can I buy a PowerEdge server with the GPUs already installed?

Yes. The XE line ships as a GPU platform rather than a server you add cards to: the XE8640 carries four NVIDIA H100 SXM5 GPUs with NVLink, and the XE9685L carries eight NVIDIA HGX H100 or H200 GPUs. Tell us the GPU model and count you need and we quote the complete build.

Do you buy Dell PowerEdge servers as well as sell them?

Yes. IO South buys used and surplus PowerEdge servers outright, handles the freight, and pays in cash or in credit toward a replacement build. Many customers run the buyback and the refresh as one conversation so the old gear funds part of the new.
