Sell Used Dell PowerEdge R740, R740xd and R640 Servers to IO South

IO South buys used Dell PowerEdge R740, R740xd and R640 servers from businesses across the United States and worldwide. The 14th generation PowerEdge line was the most widely deployed Dell server platform of the last decade, and it is now coming out of production environments by the rack as companies move to 15th and 16th generation systems or to the cloud. We are the buyer, not a broker. We resell PowerEdge servers every week, so we know what a two-processor R740xd with its bays full is worth this week and can make a real offer quickly.

How selling your Dell PowerEdge R740, R740xd and R640 servers to IO South works

  • Send your list. Model (R740, R740xd or R640), processor models and count, total memory, drive bays and controller, quantity, condition, and where the hardware sits: your data center, a colocation facility, an office, a school or storage. Call 855-272-5044 or email info@iosouth.com.
  • A fair-market offer at no cost, usually within one business day. We buy and resell Dell PowerEdge servers every week, so the offer is priced against real resale value, not a depreciation table.
  • One offer, one pickup. A single unit, a closet, or a full site refresh is the same conversation.
  • We handle logistics. We send a rep to palletize and wrap, arrange freight pickup, and pay for shipping. Evaluation, logistics, freight and payment are handled in house.
  • Your configuration stays yours. Every unit is factory reset before resale, and drives in any server are wiped or destroyed, or returned to you if your policy requires it.
  • United States and worldwide. We buy from businesses across the US and from sites overseas.

Sell used Dell R740 servers

The PowerEdge R740 is the 2U dual-socket general purpose server of the 14th generation: two Intel Xeon Scalable processors (first generation 5100, 6100 and 8100 series, or second generation 5200, 6200 and 8200 series), 24 memory slots, 8 or 16 front drive bays in 2.5 or 3.5 inch form factors, PERC storage controllers, and room for GPUs and PCIe expansion. It was sold into virtualization, database and general workloads everywhere, which means a deep pool of buyers on the resale side. Configuration drives the offer: processor generation and core count, memory total, backplane type and controller.

Sell used Dell R740xd servers

The R740xd is the storage-dense R740: up to 24 front 2.5 inch bays or 12 front 3.5 inch bays, plus optional mid-bay and rear drive bays, and NVMe backplane options. It served as a software-defined storage node, a backup target and a hyperconverged host. The xd resells best with its backplane and caddies intact, and often with the drives, which we wipe or destroy before resale or return to you. If you are pulling drives for your own destruction process, keep the caddies in the bays.

Sell used Dell R640 servers

The R640 is the 1U version of the same platform: two Xeon Scalable processors, 24 memory slots, 8 or 10 front 2.5 inch bays with NVMe options, in a short-depth chassis built for dense racks. It was the standard compute node in a lot of clusters, so it reaches us in quantity, and it resells in quantity. Tell us the processor models and the memory total per node, because a uniform cluster of identical R640s is easier to place than a mixed lot.

What about the rest of the 14G family?

The R740 and R640 have siblings that often sit in the same rack: the R440 and R540 entry servers, the four-socket R840 and R940, the T440 and T640 towers, and the AMD-based R6415, R7415 and R7425. Put them all on one list. For 15th generation R750 and R650 systems see sell used Dell PowerEdge R750 servers, and for the full line see sell Dell PowerEdge servers.

What to send for an R740 or R640 quote

  • Model for each server (R740, R740xd, R640) and how many of each.
  • Processor model and count, total memory, and the drive configuration, or a note that drives are removed.
  • Storage controller (PERC H730P, H740P, H750 or HBA330) and the network daughter card.
  • Condition, and whether the servers are still racked and powered.
  • Location, including any colocation facility, and the earliest pickup date.
  • Photos of the front, rear and service tags, or an iDRAC or OpenManage inventory export. Reset iDRAC before handoff.

Where we buy

Data centers, colocation facilities, hospitals, schools, government offices and businesses that are moving to newer PowerEdge generations or to the cloud. IO South has offices in Marietta, Georgia and Cincinnati, Ohio, and buys from the United States and worldwide. A refresh is a project, not a pickup: we plan the sequence, label and palletize on site, arrange freight, and keep a record of what left the building.

Why sell your R740 and R640 servers to IO South

IO South is an established enterprise IT hardware company that buys and resells Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant and Supermicro servers, data center GPUs and networking equipment every day. PowerEdge systems move through our Marietta, Georgia and Cincinnati, Ohio facilities constantly, which is why we can tell you what an R740xd or a rack of R640s is worth this week and stand behind the number. One offer, one pickup, drives handled, freight paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the R740, R740xd and R640 for resale?

All three are Dell 14th generation (14G) dual-socket servers on Intel Xeon Scalable first and second generation processors. The R740 is the 2U general purpose server, the R740xd is the 2U storage-dense version with up to 24 front drive bays plus mid and rear bays, and the R640 is the 1U version. All three resell steadily. The xd with its drive bays full is often the strongest of the three.

Do you buy a single R740 or only lots?

Both. One R640 from a branch office is a normal purchase. So is a hundred-server virtualization cluster. Quantity affects the offer, not whether we make one.

Does configuration matter?

Yes, more than anything else. Second generation Xeon Scalable processors (the 5200, 6200 and 8200 series) with high core counts, large memory totals, NVMe backplanes, the PERC H740P or H750 controller and 25 gigabit network daughter cards all raise the offer. Tell us the processor models, total memory, drive bays and controller.

What about the drives and our data?

Drives are wiped or destroyed before anything is resold, or returned to you if your policy requires it. If you have already pulled the drives, tell us the servers ship diskless and the offer reflects that. Caddies left in the bays are worth keeping with the server.

Should we reset iDRAC before handoff?

Yes. Reset iDRAC to factory defaults and clear any enterprise license binding you do not want to transfer, so the systems can be tested on arrival. If that is not possible before pickup, tell us and we handle it on receipt.

Our servers are in a colocation facility. Can you still buy them?

Yes. Tell us the site and whether the servers are still racked and powered. We coordinate the pickup with the facility, send a rep to palletize and wrap, and arrange the freight.

Do you buy R740 and R640 servers from outside the United States?

Yes. IO South buys from businesses across the United States and from data centers worldwide. Send the location with your list and we include freight and import handling in the plan.

Do you also sell Dell PowerEdge R740 and R640 servers?

Yes. IO South sells tested used and new PowerEdge systems. Browse the Dell PowerEdge category and the Dell rack servers for current stock, or ask by email for a configuration.
